Phonics
Reading and Phonics
At Elton we teach a carefully structured, DFE approved Systematic Synthetic Phonics programme throughout the school.
Pupils read well matched decodable books that are linked to the learning taking place in school and that support their early reading until they are secure with phonics.
Children also share high quality books which encourage the vital skills of story-telling and reading comprehension during daily ‘book talk time’ sessions, class reading sessions and at home.
We encourage children to read their decodable Rhino Readers daily at home and a shared book using an ‘I read to you, then you read to me’ approach which ensures parents are involved in their child’s journey to becoming a fluent and successful reader.
In KS2 we continue to revise phonic approaches to learning and encourage the children to foster a love of reading. Children read regularly in school and are encouraged to read at home.
